Ever had the conversation with someone when the conversation turns to ‘this is what a women needs’ or ‘this is what women want’…? I find myself perplexed at perceived notions and commentary that arises of these discussions…and what assumptions are made about what women really want. Last I checked…we are all unique…so why would we assume (woman or man) that ‘what we need’ or ‘what we want’ is the same?
This topic reminded me of a poem a dear friend sent me long ago…and it’s time to dust it off, type it out and share…because it’s spot on. It isn’t about what we want or need. Rather, it is about what we should have and what we should know.
A woman should have…
A set of screwdrivers. A cordless drill. A black (or red) lace bra…
One friend…who can always make her laugh.
One friend…who lets her cry.
One friend…that is 110% honest and real. No matter what.
One friend…that will be there…anytime of day…night…even if they live halfway across the world.
A good piece of furniture. Not previously owned by anyone else…or in her family.
Eight matching plates. Wine glasses with stems. And a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honored and that she loves making.
A feel of control over her destiny.
A woman should know…
How to fall in love without losing herself.
How to quit a job. Breakup with a lover. Confront a friend without losing the friendship.
When to try harder…and when to walk away…
To never stop wishing. To never lose hope. And to be a realist.
That she can’t change…the length of her calves…the width of her hips…or her genes and parents.
That her childhood may have not been perfect…but the future is hers…
What she would and wouldn’t do for love…or more…
How to live alone (even if she doesn’t like it).
Whom she can trust.
Whom she can’t trust.
And why she should not take it personally if she can or can’t trust someone.
Where to go…be it her best friend’s counter for coffee or wine…or a charming inn on a golf course or beach or woods…or the place that soothes her soul…
What she can wants to accomplish…and to never let other put limits on her…especially herself.
