Fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.
-Ruth Bader Ginsburg
A woman, individual, leader, public figure…she was known for being persistent, tough, intelligent, a fighter, and a lover of opera…She never gave up even in the face of all adversity throughout her life (personally and professionally).
She believed the law was gender-blind and was vocal about that up to her very last day.
She served 27 years as a Supreme Court Justice and was the second woman to ever be given the nomination. It is one of the many accomplishments that history will always compliment and congratulate her for.
Regardless of what ‘side of the aisle’ you are on, there is no question in my mind, Ruth Ginsberg is a human being that we should all look and take best practices from. Her brand was her brand and she never apologized for it. She fought for what she believed in and for equality. In the face of never having an equal voice, or pay, at the table, she never let that get in her way to rise. She failed over and over, she was rejected many times, and yes she rose.
She influenced. She created a path most never rise to the occasion to accomplish. She had a willingness and want to stand in the face of adversity. She was polished and also didn’t mind the labels that most men never receive when making decisions. She worked with others that held different beliefs. She raised children to be better humans. She challenged society to think differently.
Did everyone agree with her? No. Was she ‘liked’ by all who crossed her path? No. Is that the point? No.
The point is that RBG led with a consistent approach, an intent she believed in and with passion that changed injustice and gender equality for this nation. There is a foundation in this country, especially for women.
Ruth is an example of why it is so important for us, as humans, to stop fighting each other. To listen, to work together, and to bring the differing opinions to the table. By doing so, we fight for what is truly important, we lead in a way that shows all generations, especially the younger generations, how change is created that serves society in a positive fashion, and how you can do it in a manner that is inclusive.
I say often #youarewhatyoudo. Ruth…you showed us all just that. Thank you. For all you did. RIP.
